Funeral services for Mattie Jo Ward, 91, of Cordele were held at 4:00 Sunday, January 12, 2020 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services with Rev. Roy Gibbs and Rev. Maggie Bloodworth officiating. Vicky Brown, pianist played soft music and accompanied herself as she sang “Sweet Beulah Land.” Rev. Gibbs sang “Where Could I Go But To The Lord?” Pallbearers were Johnny Sanders, Clay Ward, Brian Wise, Shel Ward, Jim Maxey and Joe Murphy. Employees and former employees of Southern Bell served as honorary pallbearers. The committal service officiated by Rev. Bolldworth, followed in Sunnyside Cemetery. Mattie Jo passed away Friday, January 10, 2020 at Navicent Health Center in Macon. She was the daughter of the late Joel Albert and Mattie Pennington Murphy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bela W. Ward; a granddaughter, Emily Supers; two brothers, Earl Murphy and Cawood Murphy; and a sister, Christine Murphy; and a niece, Ann Maxey. She was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company and an active member of Wenona Methodist Church. Mattie Jo is survived by her daughter, Tina Ward Supers and Charles Supers of Cordele; a granddaughter and her husband, Rachel and Steven Welch; three great-grandchildren, Buddy Welch, Sarah Welch and Caitlyn Welch; three nieces, Earlene Sanders of Vienna, Carol White of Sycamore and Kay Billips of Glenville, West VA; and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
