History of the Property:

Joseph Columbus Hamilton originally bought  the 400 acres back in the 1870’s for $75 and a shotgun. He then set about building a home and developing a working farm. One of the first projects was constructing a sawmill and turning the pines to lumber, and the forest to fields. The house was built in 1880 from the pines on the property, and the crops that were grown were diverse. A dairy was soon added shortly after. The brick walls were once a shady area where milk was cooled, and has now be transformed into a fire pit for guests and visitors. The circular columns on the porch were fashioned from solid pine that was pulled from the rich bottomland.

Dr. Ann Hamilton is one of the last surviving Hamilton’s, and the daughter of Herbert W. Hamilton, Joseph’s youngest son. Except for only two years where he attended the Georgia Military Academy he lived and worked on the farm. Dr Hamilton says that when her grandfather Joseph Columbus proposed to his wide Laura Anne Williams Hamilton, he promised her ” I have a fine home here and know I would make you happy.” She accepted. Together they raised a family that had lived here continuously for three generations. Farming is hard work and labor intensive, and it has taken many hands to successfully run the farm.

The yard remains and the house has been immaculately restored, and the red barn has been turned into a beautiful event space. This is a great place to host weddings, retreats, and special occasions.
