Schools close down in preparation for Irma

CORDELE — With Hurricane Irma on the precipice of making landfall in Florida, schools in Southwest Georgia are already cancelling schools.

Crisp County and Crisp Academy both will be closed for school on Monday. According to Crisp County Superintendent David Mims, the decision to close schools was made early this morning.

“We worked with our emergency management partners — the Sheriff’s Office and last night the storm took a turn for the worst for our area,” Mims said. “For the safety of students and staff we came to the decision this morning to cancel school for Monday.”

Mims says they will continue to monitor the storm to see if there will have to be any further cancellation of school days.

“We’re working with other area schools and it possibly could be as late as Monday if we’re going to cancel any other days,” Mims said.

Dooly County announced at 9:30 a.m. they had also closed their schools for Monday in a press release.

“Due to the dangerous conditions associated with Hurricane Irma, Dooly County Schools will be closed Monday September 11, 2017.  We will revisit the possibility of resuming normal school operations Tuesday September 12, 2017 once we have received accurate information that it is safe to do so.

Continue to check the District’s Website for updated information as well as receipt of information from our One Call Now system.

Dooly County Employees will receive information from their immediate supervisors.

Possible make-up days will be issued at a later date.”

Hurricane Irma is projected to bring gusts of more than 70 miles per hour to the Crisp County area on Monday afternoon according to the Ventusky projection model.
