The Dooly County School System has delayed the first day of school until August 19 after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.
“As one of the largest employers in Dooly County, we also have the potential to be one of the largest carriers and spreaders of COVID-19 transmission,” Superintendent of Schools Craig Lockhart said in an email. “On July 29, we were notified that at least one of our employees has tested positive for COVID-19 infection since returning to work.”
Lockhart said all staff is quarantined until August 12. “Due to the nature of our work, numerous teachers and instructional staff were exposed to the individual,” he said. “Per Department of Public Health guidelines, teaching will begin on August 19.”
Lockhart said the employee was in close contact with other staff members. Since then, he said, all staff have received regular temperature checks and are doing well. “If your children have been exposed to coaches, we are confident they are fine,” he said. “But as a precaution, you may want to have your child seen by your pediatrician. Again, we are confident at this time that our faculty and staff are in good health, so any students who have been in close proximity should be okay.”

Wilcox County suspended middle school, JV and varsity football and JV and varsity softball until Aug 12 after four football players and a coach tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by exposure to coronavirus. On the school’s Facebook page, Wilcox County Superintendent Julie Childers reported that 33 players and 13 staff members, including all football coaches and one softball
coach. “Please know,” Childers said, “that we are monitoring this COVID-19 outbreak closely. We want to keep your loved ones well and safe during these uncertain times.”
